Job Summary

The principal functions of the Project Specialist for Racial and Social Equity are to partner in fundraising, and coordinate and direct projects within the Racial and Social Equity Initiative from inception to completion.  This person will also assist in the development of programs and play a key role in measuring their impact, report on the different projects and the overall Initiative to measure progress, and ensure that funders understand and continue to support the activities of the Initiative.


Primary Responsibilities

Project Specialist

  • Carry out defined project scopes and objectives
  • Aid in the preparation of budgets based upon scope of work and resource requirements
  • Manage detailed project schedules and work plans
  • Assist in coordinating all schedules and motivating and monitoring all individuals involved in assigned projects
  • Assist in managing relevant contracts with vendors and suppliers by assigning tasks as well as communicating and tracking predetermined deliverables
  • Provide regular project updates to the Executive Director regarding strategy, adjustments, and progress
  • Assist in managing processes that generate, collect, and translate project data
  • Plan and participate in meetings, discussion groups, and other types of events to advance projects, promote project visibility, and/or fundraise
  • Serve as a resource for project information, uncovering problems and offering suggestions to the Executive Director in response to questions from internal and external sources
  • Offer suggestions to identify, evaluate, recommend, and implement ways to measure and report upon the impact of projects and the Initiative overall, including the identification of suggestions for improvement
  • Help prepare project and Initiative results for internal and external audiences


Program and Initiative Development

  • Assist in identifying, developing, supporting, and presenting programs within the Racial and Social Equity Initiative
  • Facilitate the tracking and reporting of Initiative goal achievement
  • Provide input and support to CLS’s internal Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Liberation (IDEAL) related activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned



  • Resolves problems while displaying professional expertise
  • Utilizes organizational and project management skills to accomplish departmental goals and address challenges
  • May coordinate work for other consultants and/or interns
  • Manages programs and works on internal and external teams, as well as independently
  • Reports to the Executive Director and provides regular status updates while offering creative suggestions for improvement
  • Builds internal and external relationships and supports culture and organizational values through daily interactions


Required Education/Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years of professional level experience, with a minimum of 1 year of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Liberation (IDEAL) related experience
  • Possess excellent verbal, written, and digital communication skills
  • Knowledge of project management software
  • Able to provide administrative and project management support to an executive or multiple executives
  • Skilled in problem solving and the ability to succeed in evolving environments
  • Demonstrated record of sound political judgment and bipartisanship


Preferred Education/Experience

  • Minimum of B.A. or B.S. degree from nationally accredited institution in related major preferred
  • Bilingual, Spanish preferred
  • Experience  advocating and creating public policy for the life sciences industry


Physical Demands

  • Must be able to stand, sit, talk, listen, and respond for an extended period
  • Must be able to use hands and fingers to operate a computer, telephone, and keyboard
  • Close vision is required due to computer work
  • Ability to sit at a computer for an extended period
  • Must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and provide proof of vaccination (or provide appropriate medical or religious exemption documentation)
